The Lernwerkstatt in Karlsruhe - the new favorite place to learn, read and try things out
The Learning Workshop at the Baden State Library was opened yesterday. You can still experience the opening program until the end of the week. Maren Krähling-Pilarek gives us an overview of the program during the opening week and beyond.
Visitors can expect extensive equipment in the learning workshop. There are touch displays, a media studio, two editing suites, a wide range of media technology that can be borrowed, a charging station, freely usable design thinking materials and a hybrid seminar room.
After years of studying, working and learning within their own four walls, most people are used to customizing their workplace. The State Library has also understood this: Maren Krähling-Pilarek reports that the space is “flexibly furnished so that users can simply arrange the space themselves as they wish.”
In addition, the new learning workshop offers versatile and modern equipment: “You’re basically working in digital and analog space at the same time. That’s why the equipment we offer people has to be able to do that,” explains Krähling-Pilarek.
Krähling-Pilarek explains that there is also movement within the library premises:
“Throughout the planning of the learning workshop, we realized that learning works better when you move around and don’t always just stay serious and sit in a chair. And that’s why we asked the Institute of Sport and Sports Science at KIT to cooperate with us. As part of her bachelor’s thesis on movement-oriented learning, a student has now written a concept for how we can get our visitors moving more. It’s a sporty, digital rally through the library and exercise breaks. We hope that people will join in and be infected by our joy.”

For all those who spend most of their time in the digital space, there are touch displays that visitors can use to connect to their devices and work together. There is also a seminar room that is technically equipped so that workshops, lectures or seminars can be held there both on site and in hybrid form.

Everyone can use it. The rooms and study spaces, as well as technical equipment for video or audio recordings, can be reserved in advance. All you need is a library card, which is free of charge for pupils and students.
If you want to learn something new or deepen your skills, you can choose from workshops and courses in the Lernwerkstatt program. The team has many tried and tested concepts. It has been working with students and sixth formers on information literacy for over ten years. As part of such courses, participants learn “how do I research properly for my term paper and academic work? How can I avoid plagiarism? Literature management, software and other things. We are now expanding the content to include video and image production,” Krähling-Pilarek tells us.
Creative writing, creative presentation and even programming can also be learned here free of charge in workshops.
Program
From 14 to 18 March, there will be a varied opening program with guided tours, lectures and workshops for pupils, students, teachers and anyone else who is interested. Anyone who would like to get to know the premises can attend one of the various guided tours. If you want to learn something new straight away, you’re sure to find what you’re looking for in the workshops on offer.
