Tried it out: Karlsruhe.app, your organizer for the fan-shaped city
The new Karlsruhe.app has been available since December 17, 2021. The smartphone app for iOS and Android bundles digital offers from Karlsruhe in a virtual marketplace.
Karlsruhe regularly occupies the top spots in Germany when it comes to topics such as smart city and digital administration. Now the fan-shaped city is going one step further – and is bringing a new, central communication channel to citizens’ smartphones with the Karlsruhe.app.
At launch, the app essentially combines two functions:
- digital offers from Karlsruhe are clearly presented on a virtual marketplace.
- Via various channels (Karlsruhe erleben, Aktuelles aus dem Rathaus, karlsruhe.digital, FZI-News, etc.), citizens can keep up to date on all the topics they are interested in.

Karlsruhe.app: Exchange with the community for permanent further development
The Karlsruhe.app emerged from the “digital@KA” project, was funded by the state of Baden-Württemberg and conceptually developed by a broad IT consortium from Karlsruhe: The Office for IT and Digitization was in charge of implementing the project – together with project partners such as CAS Software AG, YellowMap, ISB AG and the FZI Research Center for Information Technology.
The app, which was released in mid-December, is initially a minimal viable product version. It only supports the first basic functions and will be continuously developed over the coming months in consultation with the community.
Everyone who has already tested the app has the opportunity to give feedback via a specially created questionnaire: What could be done better with the app? What functions would citizens like to see? What is the app used for in everyday life?
“The Karlsruhe.app has a lot of potential! We want to launch it with more content and functions by Easter. My wish for Christmas this year would be that we get as many people as possible to join in.”
Markus Losert, CIO / CDO of the City of Karlsruhe and Head of the Office for Information Technology and Digitization
Karlsruhe.app as a prime example of the “Karlsruhe principle of short distances”
In the future, users will be able to quickly and easily access everything that is important to them personally in and around Karlsruhe: from selected news and reports to citizen services, participation formats, associations, gastronomy, leisure, culture, shopping, tourism and events. Always with a high degree of personalization and data security.
“With the Karlsruhe.app, the city of Karlsruhe offers a unique information platform for its citizens. Under the motto “Your city. Always there.”, a lively forum for everyone in the city will be created over the next few years.
The app development process is also a prime example of the close cooperation between administration, business and science, which we like to call the “Karlsruhe principle of short distances” with our karlsruhe.digital initiative.
Martin Hubschneider, CEO of CAS Software AG and one of the chairmen of the karlsruhe.digital initiative.
The Karlsruhe.app can now be downloaded for iOS and Android.
