InnovationFestival meets KIT Science Week: Shaping a sustainable future together

karlsruhe.digital

The second KIT Science Week is all about sustainability and climate protection – the InnovationFestival @karlsruhe.digital is also taking part this year.

Sustainability has many facets. Climate, environmental and species protection, resource conservation, ecological growth, “green” entrepreneurship, global justice – it can only succeed if everyone pulls together. That is why the KIT Science Week, from October 10 to 15, 2023, invites you to join in and help shape the future under the motto “Shaping a sustainable future together”. The karlsruhe.digital initiative is also taking part. At its InnovationFestival @karlsruhe.digital, it will be presenting digital innovations from the Karlsruhe TechnologyRegion as part of the KIT Science Week. They have the potential to drive the transformation towards a sustainable economy and society.

“Without dialogue, sustainability has no chance,” emphasizes Professor Thomas Hirth, Vice President Transfer and International Affairs at KIT. The KIT Science Week highlights the diverse challenges involved in the transformation to a sustainable society. It raises awareness and shows what research and innovation can contribute to the success of the necessary change. “But it also allows the people affected to have their say, many of whom are worried about the future,” explains Hirth. “We take their impulses, ideas and arguments into our research and agenda setting.”

Events for all those thirsty for knowledge

For one week, the KIT Science Week combines scientific exchange in top-class specialist conferences with participation-oriented events for all “thirsty for knowledge”. The trinational congress of the Science Week under the direction of Professor Johannes Orphal from the KIT Center for Climate and Environment deals with the “transformation to a sustainable society”. Many small and large events will bring social groups together on site or online: From a panel discussion and an escape room to open labs, a climate slam and citizen dialog to a climate puzzle, open-air concert and excursion. International scientists meet citizens, families, schoolchildren, trainees, students and prospective students, decision-makers from politics and business as well as cultural professionals. They explain causes, show solutions, classify facts and figures, provide orientation and present their research results and innovations for discussion.

Strong partners for dialog

The karlsruhe.digital initiative, in which stakeholders from business, administration, science and culture are involved, is also taking part. It is once again organizing its InnovationFestival as part of the KIT Science Week. “There is enormous potential in the combination of digital innovation and sustainability transformation.” So says Gabriele Luczak-Schwarz, First Mayor of the City of Karlsruhe and Chairwoman of the karlsruhe.digital initiative. Digital solutions such as the software from HQS Quantum Simulations, which supports researchers in their search for new materials, chemicals or medicines. AI-supported process mining from MEHRWERK, which supports companies on their way to greater sustainability. Or InnoCharge charging optimization, which enables sustainable, affordable and green e-mobility. At the InnovationFestival, they show how innovative ideas and projects have a positive impact on everyday life.

“We need innovations, especially in the digital sector. Because they play a decisive role in mastering the challenges of the future and at the same time strengthening Karlsruhe as a digital and business location. The topics of the KIT Science Week and the InnovationFestival of the karlsruhe.digital initiative complement each other perfectly. Both events therefore benefit from each other. In this respect, I am very pleased about the renewed and close cooperation with KIT,” Luczak-Schwarz continued.

InnovationFestival @karlsruhe.digital meets KIT Science Week

“The aim of the InnovationFestival is to make the range of digital innovations from Karlsruhe and the region known beyond the region,” says Martin Hubschneider, Managing Director of CyberForum e.V. and Chairman of the karlsruhe.digital initiative. The InnovationFestival @karlsruhe.digital therefore offers the best digital innovations from Karlsruhe and the Karlsruhe TechnologyRegion a big stage. The content is available – on site at the ZKM | Center for Art and Media and in the livestream.

In addition to the high-caliber keynote speech on the Baden-Württemberg AI Alliance, start-ups, renowned companies and research institutions will present their latest digital innovations in ten-minute pitches. “All of the contributions will demonstrate the broad range of expertise and how Karlsruhe is using technology in a targeted manner to improve coexistence and quality of life,” adds Hubschneider. The event will conclude with “InnovationFestival meets KIT Science Week” in the Tollhaus at the Alter Schlachthof. There will be ample opportunity to exchange ideas and celebrate.

Inspiring enthusiasm for the exchange

Despite the coronavirus pandemic, almost 9,000 people from Karlsruhe and the region attended the premiere of KIT Science Week in October 2021, either in person or online. The events revolved around the topic of “Artificial Intelligence”. The first KIT Science Week also met with a great response from the participating scientists. The organizers want to build on this success and inspire as many people from diverse population groups as possible with science this year.
