A U.S. investment fund that manages $19 billion in assets is scouring Europe for the most promising startups in the booming defense sector. Bessemer Venture Partners has identified 25 such companies, including one from Karlsruhe.
Anyone who visits the company there, however, is in for a surprise: no weapons are built here, no tanks are developed, and no military equipment is assembled. Daedalus is a contract manufacturer that produces high-precision metal components for medical technology, mechanical engineering, aerospace, and much more. Most people here probably wouldn’t think of the defense sector.
And yet that is precisely what makes Bessemer’s positioning so revealing: At a time when Europe is rebuilding its defense capabilities, the companies that provide the industrial backbone—reliable, high-quality precision parts, available on demand and on a large scale—are suddenly becoming strategically relevant. A company capable of this is not necessarily part of the defense industry. But it is indispensable to the industry because modern defense systems rely on complex, precision components that must be available quickly.
Daedalus can do just that. From a 4,600 m² facility in Karlsruhe, the startup serves customers across Europe, ranging from small and medium-sized businesses to technology conglomerates. At the heart of it all is a clear vision: to digitize and automate the manufacturing of precision parts, thereby making the process significantly more efficient. This means that instead of waiting weeks for specialty parts, companies can upload their drawings online and receive custom-made products in no time—manufactured by machines and controlled by software and adaptive algorithms.
Daedalus combines traditional CNC technology with state-of-the-art AI, which automatically derives the optimal production process from the digital blueprints—including tool selection, machining sequence, and machine configuration. Robotic arms clamp metal blanks in place, sensors monitor the milling and turning processes, and the entire manufacturing process can be tracked digitally in real time. For customers, this represents a quantum leap in terms of speed, reliability, and transparency.
Entrepreneurial Spirit Meets AI Expertise
Daedalus was founded by Jonas Schneider, a computer scientist from Karlsruhe who had previously worked in Silicon Valley for several years. There, he was involved with OpenAI, the company now known worldwide for ChatGPT. The idea for his own company arose from a very practical problem: In a robotics project, a component was defective, but it took months to obtain suitable replacement parts.
So why not build a factory that manufactures these specialized parts on its own at the push of a button—and does so as intelligently as possible?
Back in his hometown of Karlsruhe, Schneider set to work on exactly that. According to the company, by 2026 Daedalus will employ over 150 people from more than 30 countries—an international team of software developers, robotics experts, and manufacturing engineers.
Here, the creative dynamism of the startup world meets the precision and experience of traditional industry. What makes this combination special is that Daedalus’s software learns from every job. Just as navigation systems improve with every kilometer driven, the factory’s AI models continuously optimize processes, tool usage, and machining strategies.
The custom-developed platform manages the entire process, from order acceptance to shipping. Every step of production is documented, analyzed, and automatically adjusted for similar follow-up orders. This not only saves time but also ensures consistently high quality even as requirements become increasingly customized.
Why Karlsruhe Is the Perfect Location
Karlsruhe offers a rare combination of technological expertise, industrial tradition, and a vibrant culture of innovation. Here, AI expertise from the research sector meets industrial applications in small and medium-sized businesses—often within a radius of just a few kilometers.
At the same time, Karlsruhe is deeply rooted in the industrial landscape of Baden-Württemberg. Many of Daedalus’s clients are based in the surrounding area, in sectors such as mechanical engineering, medical technology, and the automotive industry. Unlike in Silicon Valley, where industrial manufacturing is virtually nonexistent, Daedalus finds an ideal environment here to combine modern software solutions with real-world production.
