Digitization concerns everyone! When, if not now? And who, if not us? The digital transformation is no longer a futuristic vision, it is happening now and is penetrating every area of everyday life. The world is becoming increasingly digital, which has far-reaching consequences for everyone individually and also for our society as a whole .

“Digitalization depends above all on people,” explained Markus Losert, Head of the Karlsruhe Office for Information Technology and Digitalization, on the occasion of the first Colourful Night of Digitalization in 2019. This sentence emphasizes the importance of transparency and participation as central aspects of a vibrant democracy and shaping digital change in the interests and for the benefit of all.

They create the basis for social acceptance and participation that is needed to master the major social and ecological challenges. Everyone must be enabled to move confidently and safely, self-confidently and self-determinedly in the digital world.

“The raw material of today is digital expertise and we in Karlsruhe have precisely this digital expertise – from students, from companies, from scientific and cultural excellence. This is precisely why we have the opportunity to become THE IT location in Europe.”
David Hermanns, Managing Director of CyberForum e.V.

And this is also the focus of the second edition of the Colourful Night of Digitalization, which the karlsruhe.digital initiative is organizing for the second time on 1 July 2022. Karlsruhe companies, start-ups, universities, cultural institutions and administration will be highlighting the various aspects of digitalization with numerous activities. Together, insights are gained and digitalization is made tangible and thus understandable. The Colourful Night of Digitalization offers the participating partners the opportunity to make their digital ideas and solutions visible and freely accessible to the interested public for one day.

The digital transformation is both a challenge and an opportunity for growth for Karlsruhe. Cities, municipalities and federal states are in constant competition to attract and retain qualified workers. Active image cultivation plays a central role, precisely because Karlsruhe is already very well positioned and can boast a strong, digital economy and research, many digital start-ups and qualified IT specialists.

Present yourself as an active shaper of digital change and as an attractive and transparent employer. Together with karlsruhe.digital and numerous players from business, research, culture and administration, we are strengthening Karlsruhe as a digital location beyond the city limits and thus the competitiveness and future of the location.

That was the Colourful Night of Digitalization 2019

After the central opening in the town hall at 2 p.m., visitors could look forward to a decentralized programme at numerous digitalization hotspots throughout Karlsruhe.

One highlight was the drone course and challenge at CAS Software AG, where visitors were able to learn about the many different ways in which drones can be used in everyday life and try out their skills as drone pilots. Simple maneuvers could be learned on the course and pilots could compete against others. A small gift awaited the five fastest pilots. Visitors to ITscope were able to go on a real virtual adventure and save the world with coding skills. The “Coding Exit Game” developed especially for the Colourful Night of Digitalization was packed with puzzles, brainteasers and an explosive coding challenge: the digital search for the missing programmer Marvin. The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology KIT ensured that all age groups were addressed with programming workshops for children and young people and the Badisches Landesmuseum demonstrated the potential of games in a museum context.

In this way, the unique ecosystem of the digital stronghold Karlsruhe became visible and tangible – and over 100 partners and around 6,000 visitors took advantage of the offer.
