The city is setting new standards in the key areas of energy, mobility and production: the autonomous driving test field at the FZI Research Center for Information Technology is researching and testing the future of mobility directly on the streets of Karlsruhe’s Oststadt district. Excellent teaching and research institutions, networks, start-ups and companies are grouped around it. Among them is the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, which is not only home to the first, but today one of the largest computer science faculties in Germany. Its graduates: in demand worldwide, rooted in the region. They are the fuel of an ambitious start-up landscape and carry “Innovation made in Karlsruhe” far beyond the state’s borders.
Business, art and networking
In doing so, they build on a close, fast-moving network of various players that has grown over many years. An important component is the CyberForum, the largest regionally active IT network in Europe. It supports companies in every phase of growth and creates a lively platform for exchange and development. Innovation in Karlsruhe often begins with art: renowned research facilities and cultural institutions are located in the city, such as the globally unique ZKM Center for Art and Media, which attracts art and technology enthusiasts alike.

karlsruhe.digital – an experience for all
Nowhere else do science, culture and research, administration and business work so closely together. A reason for the city to set itself a special goal: To make Karlsruhe the engine of digitalization. Whether digital citizen administration, broadband expansion or mobility of the future – the city is setting standards today as part of the karlsruhe.digital initiative. Here too, success is only conceivable together: In cooperation with 11 working groups, over 25 institutions and more than 50 companies from the digital sector, the ambitious project is being brought to life. One of this year’s highlights was the Colourful Night of Digitalization on 11 October 2019, when administration, companies, cultural institutions, associations and universities opened their doors to Karlsruhe’s citizens and all interested parties. Digital life, research and work – that’s Karlsruhe. The first city festival of digital solutions brought this to life for everyone.
