Media Arts at the Colourful Night of Digitization

On June 7, Karlsruhe as a digital location invites you for the third time to coder workshops, start-up pitches, discussion rounds, company parties with families and friends, drone courses, career advice or guided tours through real laboratories and data centers and much more. Visitors can experience this year’s artistic highlight on Kronenplatz.

“Bunte Nacht der Digitalisierung” is Karlsruhe’s city festival of digital ideas and solutions that brings digitalization to life in all its facets. On which digital topics are Karlsruhe universities and research institutions actively researching? What constitutes digital art? How digital is the administration? What ideas are Karlsruhe start-ups and companies pursuing? And how can you experiment within NGOs with digital tools or get involved in those organisations?

“Bunte Nacht der Digitalisierung” kicks off at 2 p.m. at TRIANGEL on Kronenplatz with a welcome address by Stefan Krebs, State Government Commissioner for Information Technology and CIO and CDO of the State of Baden-Württemberg. From 3 p.m., around 60 partners of the Colourful Night of Digitalization will be showcasing their digitalization highlights at various hotspots throughout the city. Whether lectures for interested professionals, hands-on workshops for citizens, a summer party for employees and their families and friends – each partner designs its own program. The unique ecosystem of the digital stronghold Karlsruhe can be seen and experienced in over 200 events. After the decentralized programme, the Colourful Night of Digitalization will be celebrated in style at TRIANGEL from 10 pm.

Experience media art

Right at the beginning of the event until 11 pm, media art installations will be on display on and around Kronenplatz:

  • Echoes and Archives Part II – In the vortex of data and fleeting bills on Kronenplatz: The artist collective Francis Karat mobilizes AI models for the Colourful Night of Digitalization and lets them hallucinate the abstractions of future administration. The result is an experimental film without human intention, a futuristic reimagining of Marker’s “photo novel”. Through a rearrangement of the familiar yellow roadblocks, the story breaks out of the screen and interacts with the Kronenplatz.
  • A factor of evolution in the TRIANGEL Studio: For Tina Jander’s sound and video installation, digital sound recordings of a cello, a shaman drum and a prepared piano, as well as voices, were processed and arranged in a Digital Audio Work (DAW) station. The digital film recordings create a dream-like aesthetic and are intended to illustrate the need for a cooperative society that ensures the well-being of all its members.
  • Material Practice: Hyper Materials at TRIANGEL Space & Workshop: Material Practice explores transformative materials and textures through a sociological perspective. For the Colourful Night of Digitization, Hoin Ji and Chelsea Kim present Hyper Materials, the first work in this series: in a four-screen installation, different materials are digitally represented through a glitchy, hypnotic aesthetic to reflect on solidarity, community, rave culture and basic materials such as nickel, metal and earth.
  • Media Arts at TRIANGEL and on Kronenplatz – presentation and tour with the artists, 19.30-20.30The media artists Tina Jander, Francis Karat and Hoin Ji will present their work, discuss it with the audience in the TRIANGEL Space and then offer a short tour of their installations on and around Kronenplatz. Moderated by Víctor Fancelli Capdevila (HfG Open Resource Center).

The presentation of media art on and around Kronenplatz is supported by the UNESCO City of Media Arts Karlsruhe.
